Building My Routines and Habits

Students learn to have materials ready before a session starts, notice the time and adjust their work pace, follow classroom transitions smoothly, practice a daily self-care habit and explain why it matters, and complete the end-of-day pack-up independently.

Healthy Habits & Routines One week 3 skill segments 45–75 min across the week 5 standards

CodeWhy it connects
SM-FOC-2-1Consistent routines make task starts easier — preparation (SM-HAB-2-1) feeds directly into prompt starting (SM-FOC-2-1)
SM-GOL-2-2Small daily steps are the building blocks of habit — the same step-sequencing skill used in goal-breaking applies to routines

Key Vocabulary

  • Routine — A sequence of actions you do the same way, in the same order, regularly — until it becomes automatic
  • Habit — A behavior you do consistently, often without thinking about it, because you’ve practiced it enough times
  • Pace — How fast or slow you’re working — the speed at which you’re moving through a task
  • Transition — The move from one activity or place to another; smooth transitions keep time from being wasted
  • Self-care — The things you do intentionally to take care of your body and mind so you’re ready to learn and engage

Materials

  • Whiteboard space or chart paper + marker for I Do modeling
  • Before the week begins: Post your unit anchor chart and I Can Statement where students can see them — you’ll reference both throughout the week.
  • A visible clock or timer for the classroom — referred to throughout the week
  • Optional: a simple pack-up checklist on the board or a student reference card for Segment 3

How this lesson is structured: Each skill segment below has an I Do (teacher models the skill with a realistic scenario) and a We Do (class practices together with your guidance). Independent practice — the You Do — lives in the practice resources that go alongside this lesson.
