About this resource

A kitchen wall calendar watches a family forget a dentist visit and a game, and it feels ignored. These time management reading comprehension passages give Grade 4 students ten passages at F&P levels Q–S on planning their time and keeping their materials in order: sorting jobs by priority, planning backward from a start time and breaking a long assignment into parts. This Self-Management set brings SEL reading comprehension into study-skills lessons as well as reading groups.

What students practice

  • Using a calendar to plan
  • Focusing on one task at a time
  • Planning backward from a start time
  • Sorting tasks by importance and due date
  • Breaking a long assignment into nightly parts
  • Estimating how long homework will take

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels Q–S, each a different text type, including a workplace profile of a florist and a school news story
  • 5 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-ended questions per passage
  • A brief takeaway closing every passage
  • The multiple-choice answer key on the PDF’s last page
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • How I Stopped Being Late to Club Meetings: Nawaz plans backward, step by step, from the start time of his origami club.
  • Two Projects Due on the Same Day: Nerys reads what counts most on each assignment sheet and does the high-priority pieces first.
  • The Great Desk Reset: every class empties, sorts and resets their desks at sorting stations in one afternoon.
  • Nathan’s Nightly Pages: Nathan divides a long novel across his free nights, marks each stopping point with a sticky note and adjusts when he misses a night.
  • Why Multitasking Slows You Down: the brain switches between tasks rather than doing them at once, and each switch costs time and accuracy.

How to use these time management reading passages in Grade 4

  • Guided reading groups at levels Q–S
  • Study-skills lessons: pair “Paper Planner or Phone Reminder?” with “Priorities: What Comes First and Why”
  • A class talk before a big project begins, starting from Nerys’s two Friday deadlines
  • Independent practice, checked with the answer key

Grade fit

Fourth grade brings due dates, after-school activities and desks that fill up fast, and the passages meet students there. Levels move from Q to S, and the set ends at level S with an explainer on priorities and a how-to guide for planning an afternoon of homework, so the most demanding reading comes last. These reading passages with questions model planning tools students can try with their own assignments.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Pairs well with

Pair it with Time Management Scenario Cards so students can apply the planning ideas to new situations.

Questions teachers ask

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The multiple-choice answers are on the last page of the PDF. The open-ended questions have no fixed answer.

Which grade set should I use?

This set is written at F&P levels Q–S for Grade 4. If most of your readers are below level Q, a lower grade set of the same topic will fit better.

Do students need accounts for the digital version?

No. You share one link, and students open it on any device without logging in.
