About this resource

Mervyn misses the bus because one sneaker is hiding under his bed, right next to his toy dump truck. These time management reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten short texts at F&P levels K–M about getting ready on time, giving things a place to live and doing jobs in a sensible order. It’s a Self-Management set sized for a guided group or an SEL block on staying organized.

What students practice

  • Getting ready on time by keeping things in their spot
  • Keeping a backpack organized
  • Using a first-then plan to know what comes next
  • Finishing a job with a timer
  • Moving to a quieter spot when noise gets in the way

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels K–M, each in a different text type, from a fable-inspired story starring a grumpy backpack to a class news feature
  • 5 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-ended questions after every passage
  • A short takeaway at the end of each passage
  • Multiple-choice answer key on the last page of the PDF
  • 34 pages

A look inside

  • The Messy Backpack’s Bad Day: a backpack stuffed with crumpled papers and old snacks feels heavy and grumpy until its owner cleans it out and adds folders.
  • Flowers That Keep a Daily Schedule: morning glories open in the morning and close later each day, and the passage connects that pattern to the routines in a child’s own day.
  • Beat the Tidy-Up Timer: Monty tells how a five-minute timer helped him finish tidying his room before dinner instead of drifting off to build.
  • Meet Ottilie: The Two-Minute Warning Kid: Ottilie’s class job is calling out a two-minute warning before lunch and recess so everyone can line up on time.

How to use these time management reading passages in Grade 2

  • Guided groups: start with Mervyn at level K and work up to the four level M passages
  • An SEL block on staying organized: read “Two Mornings at Our House” and talk about what the picture checklist changed
  • Class discussion with the two open-ended questions, written for reflection and talk
  • Quick grading with the answer key

Grade fit

Levels climb from K to M, so the first passages suit readers still building fluency and the last four sit at level M. The scenes come straight from a second grader’s day: a lost sneaker, a noisy table, a class picture schedule that two helpers update each morning. These reading passages with questions double as time management activities for a class still learning routines.
