About this resource

Saturday pancakes that move to Sunday can feel like the end of the world to a third grader. These flexible thinking reading comprehension passages for Grade 3 offer ten readings at F&P levels N–P about plans that shift and routines that get shuffled. Moritz learns that a changed plan is not a canceled plan, and the other characters in the set find their own ways to bend, all within the Self-Management competency. It’s SEL reading comprehension with real reading work behind it.

What students practice

  • Settling into a new routine or place
  • Handling big feelings when plans change
  • Asking questions when things are different
  • Bending instead of breaking
  • Reading for details, inference and word meaning

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels N–P in ten text types, including a how-to guide, a science passage and a fable-inspired story
  • A takeaway of two or three sentences closing each passage
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage on details, inferences, word meaning and how a text is built
  • 2 open-ended prompts per passage for writing or talk
  • A multiple-choice answer key on the last page of the PDF
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • How Arctic Foxes Change With the Seasons: the fox trades its brown or gray summer coat for thick white winter fur as its world changes.
  • Two Swimmers, One New Pool: at a new pool, Leopold asks the coach questions while his twin Liesel waits to be told what to do.
  • The Recipe Without Eggs: Lajos wants to give up on the class-event muffins until he and his mom try mashed banana.
  • The Willow and the Oak: a proud oak refuses to bend in a windstorm and learns from the swaying willow.

How to use these flexible thinking reading passages in Grade 3

  • Whole-class lessons: read The Flexibility Dial together and talk about what thinking sounds like from stuck to bendy
  • Reading groups working through the set from level N to level P
  • Centers, with the multiple-choice pages and the answer key for checking
  • A single passage on a day when the schedule changes, such as Library Moves to the Gym for a Month

Grade fit

Levels N to P match the chapter-book stage many third graders are in. The situations are ones they meet at this age: a new drop-off door, an earlier bus, a move from a busy city to an island town reached by ferry. The questions ask for more than recall, checking inference, vocabulary and text structure, so these reading passages with questions stretch comprehension too.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask

What kinds of questions follow each passage?

Five multiple-choice questions that check details, inferences, word meaning and how the text is built, plus two open-ended prompts for writing or discussion.

Is an answer key included?

Yes, for the multiple-choice questions. It is on the last page of the PDF.

Can I use one passage on its own?

Yes. Each passage stands alone, and the PDF suggests a single passage as a good pick for a day when the schedule changes.
