About this resource

“But field day is ALWAYS outside!” Rain moves it to the gym anyway. These flexible thinking what would you do scenarios give Grades 2–5 forty changed plans, new rules and new routines, each with three action cards. Students stop and think, choose a response and explain it, practicing the Self-Management that helps on days when plans don’t hold.

What students practice

  • Handling a last-minute change
  • Getting used to a new routine at home or school
  • Following new rules that apply to everyone
  • Making a plan B when a plan falls through
  • Finding a new plan together with a group

What’s inside

  • 40 scenario cards: Handling a Last-Minute Change, Getting Used to a New Routine, Rolling With Changed Rules, Making a Plan B and Finding a New Plan Together (eight each)
  • 120 action cards with one best, one partial and one impulsive choice per scenario
  • 40 reflection sheets
  • A teacher guide with five ways to use the cards; 77 pages

A look inside

  • Two Books at a Time: the library now allows two books, not five, and you’re holding four. Action cards: Choose Two for Now, Take the Top Two, Argue at the Desk.
  • No Bounce House Today: it never came, so Wren’s party switches to lawn games while you stare at the empty grass.
  • Roadwork on Parade Day: cones block the street before the neighborhood bike parade, and Jun, Priya and Kaito wait to see what happens. Plan a New Route is one option; Call It Off is another.

How to use these flexible thinking what would you do cards

  • Turn & Talk about Not Pizza Friday before showing the three cards
  • Hold a short debate on Field Day Under the Roof: is Play and Complain better than Sit on the Bleachers, and why does Check the New Stations go further?
  • Act out Slush on the Sledding Hill and invite one more good plan the cards don’t list
  • Send a reflection sheet home as homework
  • Set up SEL learning stations, including one where students write new flexible thinking scenarios of their own

Grade fit

Settings are spread across the community (14), school (13) and home (13), with changes students meet all the time: weather, a closed trail, a new pickup line, a morning checklist on the fridge. Younger students practice going along with the change; older ones can plan a group’s plan B. It all fits Grades 2–5 and doubles as decision making activities.

Digital version

The interactive digital version shares as one link: students answer the think questions (or just read them in the quick format), choose an action card and say why, on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask

What kinds of changes do the scenarios cover?

Weather changes (rain on field day, slush on the sledding hill), new routines like a morning checklist, new rules like a two-book library limit, and group plans that fall through, such as roadwork on parade day.

Do students need accounts for the digital version?

No. You share one link, and students open it on any device without logging in.
