About this resource

Learning to juggle, talking with Grandma in Spanish, saving for a skateboard: kids rarely lack goals. These goal setting task cards help students in Grades 2–5 pick one, make it clear, build the daily habits behind it and change the plan when they get stuck. With 100 prompts in two leveled sets, they build Self-Management, the SEL competency behind following through.

What students practice

  • Choosing one goal that matters to them
  • Writing a clear goal: what, how much and by when
  • Building small daily habits and breaking unwanted ones
  • Tracking progress with charts, logs and graphs
  • Planning around obstacles and changing a stuck plan
  • Linking today’s goals to dreams for the future

What’s inside

  • Set A: 50 cards labelled Grades 2–3; Set B: 50 cards labelled Grades 4–5 (100 in total)
  • Set A themes: Things I want to learn or do; Picking one goal; Good habits every day; Keeping track of my progress; Changing my plan when I’m stuck
  • Set B themes: Setting clear, doable goals; Planning around obstacles; Building and breaking habits; Tracking and adjusting; Dreams for the future
  • 2-per-page and 4-per-page printing, with one journal page per card in a second PDF
  • 81 task card pages, 103 journal pages

A look inside

  • Set A: “For each new song you learn, you color one rung of a paper ladder. How close are you to your goal? How does coloring the rungs help you keep going?”
  • Set B: “You skipped your daily reading habit for two days during a family trip. What could missing a few days mean for your habit? How could you restart it?”
  • Set B: “Your spelling-goal graph goes up, dips down, and then goes up again. What might have caused the dip? What does the whole graph tell you?”

How to use these goal setting task cards

  • Morning meetings: a Things I want to learn or do card gets students naming goals of their own
  • Small groups or counseling sessions: Planning around obstacles (B11–B20) for goals that tend to stall after a week or two
  • Writing prompts on the matching journal pages, about what students want to learn, the habits they are building and how they track progress

Grade fit

Set A, labelled Grades 2–3, stays close to home: growing strawberries, a new sign language word each day, marble jars and checklists. Set B, labelled Grades 4–5, asks students to write goals with a what, how much and by when, plan around obstacles like early winter darkness, and connect small goals to a dream such as becoming a veterinarian.

Digital version

The interactive digital task cards share as one link: you choose Set A or Set B, and students type their answers on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
