About this resource
Lakshmi has always played drums in the school band, and now the director wants her on xylophone. These flexible thinking reading comprehension passages for Grade 4 bring ten readings at F&P levels Q–S about new roles, new rules and plans that shift without warning. Students practice noticing what changed, sorting out how they feel and finding another way forward, a core Self-Management skill, and the questions after each one make this real SEL reading comprehension practice.

A look inside
- When My Mask Idea Was Already Taken: days before the parade, another table claims Ogden’s dragon mask design, so he keeps the parts he loved and turns it into a pangolin.
- Sailing With the Wind: A Coach’s Lesson: Coach Lusine teaches kids to adjust their sails and explains what a windless first race taught her.
- The Scarecrow in the New Field: a scarecrow moved to a sunflower field complains about the view, then finds a job he is proud of.
- Why City Birds Change Their Songs: some city birds sing at a higher pitch so they can be heard over low traffic noise.
How to use these flexible thinking reading passages in Grade 4
- Reading groups, moving from the level Q passages up to the level S science and how-to pieces
- Read-alouds that spark talk, such as One Long Recess or Two Short Ones?, where two classmates weigh a new schedule
- Quiet independent work, with the answer key for checking the multiple-choice pages
- A morning conversation about handling change, starting from When My After-School Program Closed
Grade fit
Levels Q through S suit fourth graders reading longer informational and narrative texts on their own. The passages take on bigger ideas than the early grades, such as the three parts of adaptability and when to switch methods mid-task, yet the settings stay close to home: a band, a jump-rope team, afternoons at Grandma’s house. These reading passages with questions also ask students to connect the text to their own lives.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
Pairs well with
Pair the reading with Flexible Thinking Scenario Cards to put the skills into practice.
Questions teachers ask
How are the open-ended questions set up?
Each passage has two. One sends students back to the text, and the other asks about their own life.
Does the set include an answer key?
Yes. The multiple-choice answers are on the last page of the PDF.
Do the passages get harder through the set?
Yes. They start at level Q and build to level S, so the last passages are the most challenging.
