About this resource

Is this goal realistic, and is my plan actually working? These goal setting reading comprehension passages help Grade 4 students ask that harder question across ten original readings at F&P levels Q–S. Goals here are plans to test and improve, and habits come apart into cue, action and reward. It’s Self-Management SEL reading comprehension that makes room for real reading work.

What students practice

  • Setting realistic goals
  • Writing a specific, measurable goal with a deadline
  • Checking progress and adjusting a plan
  • Replacing an old habit with a better one
  • Focusing on the parts of a goal they can control

What’s inside

  • 10 original passages at F&P levels Q–S
  • A takeaway ending each passage
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage on details, inference, vocabulary and main idea
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage in which readers defend an answer and sketch a goal of their own
  • A multiple-choice answer key on the last page of the PDF
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • The Goal That Was Too Big: Makoa wants to run a mile without stopping by next week, feels discouraged and resets his goal into weekly steps.
  • A Quilt Square Every Week: a neighborhood tailor’s tracking chart shows he skips busy weeks, so he adds a short weekend sewing time.
  • Three New Words Every Day: Lachlan learns words in his grandmother’s language so he can talk with her.
  • The Coin Jar at the Halfway Mark: a coin jar rattles for attention until its owner checks her bike savings plan.

How to use these goal setting reading passages in Grade 4

  • Reading groups working up from level Q to level S
  • Morning meetings that start from one passage, such as Oksana Swaps an Old Habit
  • Literacy centers, with the answer key for checking
  • Beside a goal wall in your own room, after reading The Fourth-Grade Goal Wall

Grade fit

Levels Q to S fit fourth graders who read informational text with growing independence. The passages explain ideas that suit this age, like why short practice spread over several days helps memory and the difference between outcome and process goals, while the stories keep them grounded in a mile run, a coin jar and an after-school cartoon habit. These reading passages with questions also ask students to defend their answers.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
