Building My Personal Calming Toolkit
Students build a labeled toolkit of four or more strategies matched to intensity and situation. They select strategies that fit intensity, setting, AND trigger type, using them early before peak escalation. After using a strategy, they return fully to the task and name their specific first action for re-engaging. They evaluate effectiveness and create if-then plans for high-trigger moments.
Lesson Overview
What students will be able to do after this lesson: Students will be able to build a labeled personal calming toolkit, select and use strategies early and independently, recover fully with a named re-engagement action, evaluate whether a strategy worked, and create a proactive if-then plan for a known high-trigger situation.
Skill segments at a glance:
| Segment | Segment name | Primary standards |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Building and Choosing My Toolkit | SM-REG-4-1 · SM-REG-4-2 |
| 2 | Using It Early and Coming Back | SM-REG-4-3 · SM-REG-4-4 |
| 3 | Learning From It and Planning Ahead | SM-REG-4-5 · SM-REG-4-6 |
Supporting standards reinforced:
| Code | Why it connects |
|---|---|
| SA-EMO-4-1 | Accurately labeling the feeling and its intensity is the starting point for choosing the right strategy — emotion identification is threaded throughout Segments 1 and 2. |
| SM-FOC-4-1 | Returning to the task with a named first action (SM-REG-4-4) and using strategies before peak escalation (SM-REG-4-3) directly support sustained focus and attention re-engagement. |
| RDM-SAF-4-2 | Creating an if-then plan (SM-REG-4-6) for known triggers is an act of proactive safety decision-making — anticipating risk and preparing a response before the moment arrives. |
Key Vocabulary
- Toolkit — A personal set of calming strategies you’ve chosen because they work for you — labeled so you know which ones to reach for and when.
- Intensity — How strong or big a feeling is, on a scale from small (low intensity) to overwhelming (high intensity). Different situations call for different intensity levels.
- Trigger — What sets off a strong feeling — it could be something social (someone said something), academic (a task feels too hard), or a transition (switching what you’re doing).
- Strategy — A specific thing you do on purpose to manage a strong feeling, such as taking slow breaths, drawing, going for a short walk, or squeezing something.
- If-then plan — A plan you make ahead of time: if a hard moment happens, then you’ll use a specific strategy, then you’ll take a specific first step back into your work.
- Self-regulation — Using your own tools on purpose to manage a strong feeling — staying in control of what you do next, instead of letting the feeling decide for you.
Materials
- Whiteboard or chart paper and markers
- Before the week begins: Post your unit anchor chart and I Can Statement where students can see them — you’ll reference both throughout the week.
- Optional: index cards or a small template for students to draft their personal toolkit list during Segment 1
How this lesson is structured: Each skill segment below has an I Do (teacher models the skill with a realistic scenario) and a We Do (class practices together with your guidance). Independent practice — the You Do — lives in the practice resources that go alongside this lesson.
