About this resource

A goal a child cares about on Monday can feel far away by Wednesday. This my weekly goal planner activity kit for Grades 2–4 gives students daily structure, because self-management needs scaffolding before it becomes a habit. It is a goal setting SEL lesson in the Self-Management competency.

What students practice

  • Choosing a goal for the week
  • Planning up to five daily steps
  • Marking progress each day
  • Looking back on what was easy and hard
  • Following through after a missed day

What’s inside

  • A teacher guide with a detailed script and a flexible outline: four steps across the week
  • A Weekly Goal Planner with the goal, five daily steps and a five-day progress tracker
  • A Goal Brainstorming Sheet with three questions to choose a goal before committing
  • A Weekly Reflection Page with six end-of-week questions
  • A Goal Celebration Certificate; 13 pages in all

A look inside

  • From the teacher script: “Even if you miss a day, that’s okay. Just keep going the next day.”
  • Goal Brainstorming: “What small steps will help me get there?”
  • Weekly Reflection: “What will I do differently next time?”

How to use this weekly goal planner kit

  • Open with a short conversation about goals, using the script’s image of climbing a mountain one step at a time
  • Students fill in the planner and mark each day “Completed” or “In process” with a sticker, smiley or checkmark
  • Run it as a Monday-morning routine through the week
  • At week’s end, use the reflection page and celebration certificate

Grade fit

The five-day structure and short reflection suit Grades 2–4 in elementary school. Among goal setting activities, it is one of the SEL activities built around a week-long cycle of setting, acting and reflecting.

Questions teachers ask
