Giving Back: Design to Impact

Students learn to identify a real, specific need in the school or community and design an initiative around it, plan and carry through a multi-step contribution initiative on their own initiative, collect and report meaningful evidence of impact using a specific evaluation method, reflect on what leading the initiative taught them about giving back personally, and design a way to sustain a giving-back habit beyond the class project.

Kindness & Giving Back One week 3 skill segments 45–75 min across the week 5 standards

Lesson Overview

What students will be able to do after this lesson: Students will be able to identify a specific community need, design and carry through a multi-step initiative to address it, collect evidence of its impact using a named evaluation method, and reflect on what the experience revealed about their personal connection to giving back.

CodeWhy it connects
SM-GOL-5-1Managing a multi-step contribution initiative requires setting goals with milestones and following a plan to completion — the same skill built in SM-GOL
SA-VAL-5-5The sustainability plan in Segment 3 asks students to show their values through a defined, repeatable practice — values expressed as daily behavior
SoA-FAR-5-3Identifying a real community need and designing an initiative to address it is the same move as connecting individual contributions to community well-being

Key Vocabulary

  • Initiative — a project or action you design and lead yourself because you’ve noticed something your community needs
  • Evaluation method — a specific way of collecting evidence to measure whether something worked (survey, count, observation log, quote from recipients)
  • Contribution — something you give to a community — time, effort, a project — that benefits others, not just yourself
  • Giving-back habit — a regular, repeated practice of contributing to others or your community, beyond any single project

Materials

  • Whiteboard or chart paper (board fixtures required — see each segment)
  • Markers in two colors (for wrong version / correct version contrast in I Do)
  • Before the week begins: Post your unit anchor chart and I Can Statement where students can see them — you’ll reference both throughout the week.
