Our Class Community
Students learn to explain why a class rule helps everyone (not just some people), name one right they have and one responsibility connected to it, contribute to building a class agreement with a fairness-based reason, carry out a class job reliably for a full week, and name how their own behavior affects the rest of the class.
Lesson Overview
What students will be able to do after this lesson: Students will be able to explain what a class rule is and say why it helps everyone; name one right they have at school and one responsibility connected to it; contribute to building one class agreement with a fairness-based reason; carry out a class job or role reliably for a full week; and name one way their own behavior affects the rest of the class.
Skill segments at a glance:
| Segment | Segment name | Primary standards |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rules, Rights, and Responsibilities | SoA-FAR-2-1 · SoA-FAR-2-2 |
| 2 | Making and Keeping Our Agreements | SoA-FAR-2-3 · SoA-FAR-2-4 |
| 3 | How My Choices Affect Everyone | SoA-FAR-2-5 |
Supporting standards reinforced:
| Code | Why it connects |
|---|---|
| SA-VAL-2-1 | Class values (what we believe in) are the foundation that class rules grow from — the values work from Lesson 5 grounds the fairness discussion here |
| RDM-ETH-2-3 | Fairness as an ethical principle is the same fairness discussed in class agreements — ethical reasoning in RDM connects back to community norms in SoA |
| SoA-SRV-2-4 | Contributing to class community care (L18) is one specific way of fulfilling a community responsibility — both lessons teach contribution to shared spaces |
Key Vocabulary

- Right — Something everyone in the community is entitled to — like the right to learn, to be safe, or to be treated with respect
- Responsibility — What you owe the community in return for your rights — your part of the shared agreement
- Community — A group of people who share a space, resources, and agreements — your classroom is one community you belong to
- Fair — When something works for everyone in the community — not just the people who are loudest or most comfortable
Materials

- An existing list of class rules or agreements (if available) — to reference during Segment 1 and 2

- Before the week begins: Post your unit anchor chart and I Can Statement where students can see them — you’ll reference both throughout the week.
- — post all segment frames before Day 1
How this lesson is structured: Each skill segment below has an I Do (teacher models the skill with a realistic scenario) and a We Do (class practices together with your guidance). Independent practice — the You Do — lives in the practice resources that go alongside this lesson.
