About this resource

Fifth grade is when friendships shift and viewpoints begin to collide. These perspective taking reading comprehension passages help Grade 5 readers step outside their own frame on purpose, through history, culture and everyday school life, in ten texts at F&P levels S–V. The set builds empathy and critical thinking within Social Awareness, a CASEL competency.

What students practice

  • Reading two historical viewpoints side by side
  • Disagreeing without being disrespectful
  • Challenging a stereotype with curiosity instead of judgment
  • Noticing how scientists changed their minds
  • Judging how media shapes a view of the world

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels S–V, from a historical compare-and-contrast to a news feature and a first-person reflection
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Answer key for all 50 multiple-choice questions
  • 34 pages, including an overview of the passages with F&P level, text type and SEL focus

A look inside

  • Through Their Eyes: Letters from Two Fronts: a historical compare-and-contrast on dual perspectives.
  • My Grandma, My Self: a first-person reflection on generational perspective and gratitude.
  • The Plastic Problem: Whose Responsibility Is It?: an environmental piece with several social perspectives.
  • How Scientists Changed Their Minds: a STEM story about intellectual humility.
  • The View from the Back Row: a first-person reflection on spatial and emotional perspective.

How to use these perspective taking reading passages

  • Guided reading groups at levels S–V
  • Partner reading, with the open-ended questions as a discussion prompt
  • SEL reading comprehension: read “How to Disagree Without Being Disrespectful” and talk about respectful ways to disagree
  • Independent practice or homework, checked with the answer key

Grade fit

These reading passages with questions are written for Grade 5, with levels climbing from S to V. History, media and civic life widen the lens for older elementary readers, and the V-level reflection asks for careful inference.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Pairs well with

On the same topic, Perspective Taking Task Cards and Perspective Taking Scenario Cards give older readers more perspective taking activities.
