About this resource
Your front steps are already shoveled, and your neighbor’s own driveway is still white. These gratitude scenario cards point students outward, toward the good things and the people behind them, in 60 situations that ask “What could you appreciate here?” They’re written for Grades 2–6 and build Social Awareness.
What students practice
- Noticing small good things in everyday moments
- Recognizing the helpers behind the scenes
- Making a thank-you specific and sincere
- Finding something good on a day with a small letdown
- Appreciating effort and time, not just things
What’s inside
- 60 cards in five themes of 12: Noticing Good Things, People Who Help Me, Saying Thank You, Grateful on Hard Days, and Appreciating Effort, Not Just Things
- An open-ended card and a guided card (three questions) for each scenario
- Two journal pages per scenario
- 158 pages
A look inside
- The Bus Steps: your bus driver greets each kid by name, but today you hop up the steps talking about a video, and she calls “Morning!” after you.
- The Windless Kite: there’s no wind, the new kite keeps flopping, and your friend is lying in the grass pointing out a dragon-shaped cloud.
- The Guitar Strings: your uncle spends a Sunday afternoon restringing your old guitar, and you strum one chord and reach for a comic book.
How to use these gratitude scenario cards
- Share one of the Noticing Good Things gratitude scenarios at morning meeting or circle time
- Use the People Who Help Me cards in an SEL lesson about school and community helpers
- Pair a Saying Thank You card with its journal page as a quiet writing task
- Pull Grateful on Hard Days cards for small groups or counseling sessions
Grade fit
The settings are familiar from Grade 2 up: the bus, the school office, a harvest hayride, an art teacher firing clay pots before family night. The Appreciating Effort theme asks students to see time and work behind a gift, which gives older students in Grades 5 and 6 something to think about.
Digital version
The printable and digital scenario cards work together: share one link, pick the open-ended or guided format, and students respond on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
Pairs well with
Other gratitude activities: Gratitude Task Cards and Gratitude Conversation Cards.
Questions teachers ask
Do the Grateful on Hard Days cards deal with serious losses?
No. They center on small letdowns, like a kite with no wind, and ask what is still good in the moment.
Do students need accounts for the digital version?
No. Share one link, and students answer on any device without logging in.
