About this resource

Matvei worries all week about his first Saturday of homework help at the library. These free self-management reading comprehension passages give Grade 3 readers ten texts at F&P levels N–P, one for each part of Self-Management: big emotions, calming anger and worry, coping tools, focus, pausing before acting, bouncing back and good habits. The full set is free with a free account (no card needed), and it builds SEL inside your literacy time.

What students practice

  • Sorting an overwhelmed feeling into manageable pieces
  • Comparing a worry with what you already know
  • Slowing down with a careful, one-step-at-a-time task
  • Caring for your body with a simple daily habit
  • Giving one task your full attention
  • Answering multiple-choice and written-response questions about what they read

A look inside

Cool Off in Slow MotionExplains that anger makes movements fast and jerky, and that moving in slow motion on purpose can help tight muscles loosen, so your body cools off before you talk again.
Tuva the Panda Takes It Leaf by LeafWhen Tuva the Panda is upset, she wants to snap every bamboo stalk.
Raghav’s Mosaic, One Thing at a TimeRaghav glues a paper mosaic for his aunt while telling his cousin about his weekend, and pieces land in wrong spots.
The Braid That Kept Falling ApartOonagh tells how her braids kept falling apart when she tried doing her own hair.
RoutinesThe Paths Your Day Follows: Explains that routines are steps done in the same order each time, like setting up for science or cleaning the art table, and how they save time and help busy jobs run smoothly.

How to use these self-management reading passages in Grade 3

Small reading groups at levels N–P, working through the multiple-choice questions together
A short SEL lessonRead “Now, Next, Later: Sorting a Pile-Up” aloud and talk it through together
Independent practice or homework, checked later with the answer key
Written responseStudents answer the two open-ended questions after a passage such as “Ask Before You Pull”

Grade fit

Passages run from about 370 to 410 words. The early ones suit readers still settling into longer texts, and the later, higher-level ones stretch stronger third graders. Levels climb from N to P across the set.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask

Is this the full set or a sample?

It’s a full set: 10 passages with questions and an answer key, free with a free account.

How is this different from the topic sets?

It gives one passage to each of ten areas of Self-Management. A topic set stays with one area for all ten passages.

Do students need accounts for the digital version?

No. You share one link, and students work on any device without logging in.
