About this resource

“I’m so bad at this” can slip out after one missed kick in kickball. These positive self-talk task cards help students hear that inner voice and answer it with words that are kind and still true. Across 100 cards for Grades 2–5, they build Self-Awareness by moving from noticing what students tell themselves to writing their own “I am” and “I can” lines.

What students practice

  • Noticing what their inner voice says
  • Turning a mean thought into a kind one
  • Finding words that help them try again
  • Cheering themselves on through a hard task
  • Choosing self-talk that is true, not just happy
  • Writing affirmations that sound like them

What’s inside

  • Set A (Grades 2–3), five themes: Noticing what I tell myself; Changing mean thoughts to kind ones; Words that help me try; Cheering myself on; My own affirmations
  • Set B (Grades 4–5), five themes: Catching my inner voice; Flipping unhelpful thoughts; True and helpful, not just ‘happy’; Self-talk before, during and after hard moments; Creating affirmations that fit me
  • 50 cards per set, 10 to a theme, as 2 or 4 cards per page
  • Journal pages: 103 pages with one reflection sheet per card (the task card file has 81 pages)

A look inside

  • Set A: “At the ice rink, you’re learning to skate and keep wobbling. What could you say to yourself each time you stand back up?”
  • Set B: “Your family is moving, and you keep telling yourself not to feel sad. What could you tell yourself that makes room for sadness? How might it help?”
  • Set B: “On really tough days, long affirmations are hard to remember. What few words could you choose instead? Why do they fit you?”

How to use these positive self-talk task cards

  • Morning meeting: read a Cheering myself on card and collect a few words students could say to themselves
  • Counseling sessions, small groups or an SEL lesson on harsh self-talk, starting with Catching my inner voice (B1–B10)
  • Writing prompts: most affirmation cards (A41–A50, B41–B50) ask students to write their own lines on the reflection sheet

Grade fit

Set A, for Grades 2–3, works with short, familiar thoughts such as “I’m so clumsy” and asks for a kinder swap. Set B, for Grades 4–5, adds a harder idea: a fake “I’m perfect at spelling” doesn’t help either, so students look for words that are honest and kind at the same time.

Digital version

The interactive digital task cards share as one link: you choose Set A or Set B, and students type their answers on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

These aren’t a list of positive affirmations for students to repeat. The cards ask each student what their own sticky note, poster line or “I can…” sentence would say, so the words come from them.

Pairs well with

Pair these task cards for students with Positive Self-Talk Scenario Cards, or try Positive Self-Talk What Would You Do? Cards for choosing between responses.

Questions teachers ask

Will students just be told to think happy thoughts?

No. Set B has a whole theme, True and helpful, not just ‘happy’, about self-talk that is kind and still honest.

Do students need logins for the digital version?

No. You share one link, and students open it on any device without an account.
