About this resource

“Nice one, butterfingers.” Kids mutter lines like that to themselves after the smallest slip. These positive self-talk scenario cards catch 60 inner-voice moments for Grades 2–6 and ask one open question: “What could you tell yourself?” Students practice trading harsh words for kind, true ones, a Self-Awareness skill that gets stronger with use.

What students practice

  • Noticing the inner voice as it talks
  • Spotting all-or-nothing words in a thought
  • Checking a thought for what is true
  • Coaching themselves with short phrases before and during hard moments
  • Letting a hard moment be over instead of replaying it
  • Writing affirmations that fit them

What’s inside

  • 60 scenarios in five themes of 12: Noticing My Inner Voice, Flipping Unkind Thoughts, Words Before and During Hard Moments, Kind Words After It’s Over, Affirmations That Fit Me
  • Open-ended cards (“What could you tell yourself?”) plus guided cards with three questions each
  • Two journal pages per scenario, matched to the two card versions
  • 158 pages

A look inside

  • The Single Mitten: one mitten is missing, and the thought comes fast: “I lose everything. I’m so careless.” The guided card asks, “Is it true that you lose everything, or just one mitten?”
  • The Spelling Bee Stage: two kids before your turn, the words in your head get louder: “You’re not a speller. You never were.”
  • The Fortune Cookie: the slip says “You are a bold and fearless leader,” which doesn’t sound like you. The back is blank, and a pen sits on the table.

How to use these positive self-talk scenario cards

  • Read a Flipping Unkind Thoughts card at morning meeting or in an SEL lesson and talk through a kinder, truer version of the thought
  • Use the guided cards in small groups or counseling sessions; the three questions move from noticing the thought to flipping it
  • Let students write their own words with the Affirmations That Fit Me journal pages, which go past ready-made positive affirmations for students
  • Keep the cards in the calm corner, organized by theme

Grade fit

The inner-voice lines are short and in plain kid language (“I always forget.” “You can’t.”), so second graders can spot them. Older students can dig into why a thought feels true, which keeps these positive self-talk scenarios useful through Grade 6.

Digital version

The printable and digital scenario cards work together: share one link, pick the open-ended or guided format, and students respond on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Questions teachers ask

What does the guided version add?

Three questions instead of one. On The Single Mitten, students find the harshest words, check whether the thought is true, then flip it into kind, true words.

Do students need accounts to use the digital version?

No. You share one link, and students answer on any device without logging in.
