About this resource

Lourdes always waited until Sunday night to start a project, until she promised herself five minutes. These motivation reading comprehension passages give Grade 4 students ten readings at F&P levels Q–S about where the will to start, and to keep at it, really comes from. They fit a year when longer projects and independent reading ask more of students, and they bring SEL reading comprehension to your Self-Management goals.

What students practice

  • Finding personal reasons to keep going
  • Overcoming the urge to put off starting
  • Using curiosity to stay motivated
  • Choosing rewards wisely
  • Comparing reward-driven and self-driven effort

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels Q–S
  • A short takeaway after every reading
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended prompts per passage: one sends students back into the text, and one asks about their own experience
  • A multiple-choice answer key on the last page of the PDF
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • The Volunteer Who Shows Up Every Saturday: Mr. Ndlovu explains why he keeps coming to the animal shelter, even on days he feels tired.
  • The Crow Who Kept Building: when a cold late-winter wind blows, one young crow thinks about why the nest matters and keeps weaving.
  • Motivation Myths: Do You Have to Feel Like It?: taking action often creates the motivation.
  • The Science Notebook Slump: bored with daily measuring, Mumbua adds her own question and the plant experiment gets interesting again.

How to use these motivation reading passages in Grade 4

  • Small reading groups moving from level Q to level S
  • Quiet seatwork, checked with the answer key
  • A lively debate about what gets people moving, after reading When the Reading Prizes Ended
  • Pairing Fourth Graders Choose Their Own Passion Projects with a talk about how choice changes effort

Grade fit

Levels Q through S suit fourth graders who read longer texts on their own. The topics match this stage, too: some studies suggest curious people remember more of what they learn, small rewards should come after effort, not before, and Oskar has to find his own reasons to finish a long family bike ride. These reading passages with questions give students a reason to look at their own habits around work.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Pairs well with

Pair with Motivation Scenario Cards to apply the ideas to new situations.

Questions teachers ask

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The multiple-choice answers are on the last page of the PDF. The open-ended prompts ask for students' own thinking.

How do the open-ended prompts work?

Each passage has two. One sends students back into the text, and the other asks about their own experience.

Does the set say rewards are bad?

No. How to Reward Yourself the Smart Way shows how to choose small rewards that come after effort and keep students going rather than pulling them off track.
