About this resource

Second graders know the fluttery tummy before something new. These anxiety and worry reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten short texts at F&P levels K–M about what worry feels like in the body, how to spot what-if thoughts, and why a worry is a guess, not a fact. Gentle stories and simple explainers build Self-Management and early coping skills for anxiety.

What students practice

  • Noticing worry signals in the body
  • Catching what-if thoughts
  • Sharing a worry by telling, drawing or writing it
  • Facing a worry in small, brave steps
  • Making a plan with a grown-up

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels K–M in ten text types, from an owlet fable to a profile of an animal doctor
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 questions per passage for students to answer in their own words
  • Answer key for the multiple-choice questions on the last page
  • 34 pages

A look inside

  • Bubo the Owlet’s First Night Flight: a short hop to a nearby branch, then a bit farther each night.
  • Three Ways to Share a Worry: tell a trusted grown-up, draw it, or write it on a note.
  • Your Body’s Worry Alarm: a fast heartbeat and fluttery tummy, even when there is no real danger.
  • The Overnight at Grandma’s House: Alma and her mom plan a phone call before bed.
  • Dr. Boateng, the Vet Who Explains First: knowing what will happen makes worries smaller.

How to use these Grade 2 anxiety and worry reading passages

  • Small groups at levels K to M
  • SEL time, starting with a passage like “What Is a Worry?”
  • Partner reads, with the two open questions as a talk prompt
  • Independent practice, checked with the answer key

Grade fit

The worries here are second-grade sized: a new bus route, sharing a book at library storytime, a night away from home. Each of these reading passages with questions is one page at levels K to M, and the small brave steps in them are ones a second grader could try.
