About this resource
Eleni’s group misses its poster deadline, so she looks back. These self-reflection reading comprehension passages give Grade 3 readers ten texts at F&P levels N–P about asking why things turned out the way they did and how their choices touch the people around them. Every passage builds Self-Awareness, and the multiple-choice questions include word-meaning and text-structure items.
What students practice
- Reflecting on their own part in a group project
- Asking why a day turned out the way it did

A look inside
- September Letters Reopened in Spring: students reread letters they wrote to themselves and share how they have changed.
- Reflect: Where the Word Comes From: the word comes from Latin for “to bend back,” like light off still water.
- Fizz the Frog Wakes the Whole Pond: a frog who croaks loudly at dawn notices his sleepy, grumpy neighbors.
- Evening Walks With Grandpa Ghazi: a grandfather thinks over his day on his walk, and his granddaughter starts joining him.
How to use these self-reflection reading passages
- A small reading group at level O with Femi’s Fun Run Look-Back or Quick Check-In or Weekly Look-Back?
- Morning meeting with Four Questions to Ask Yourself and its bouncing-ball science experiment
- An SEL lesson on looking back, starting with My Best and Worst Dance Classes
- Independent practice, checked with the answer key
Grade fit
Third graders work in groups more often, so a poster project that falls apart feels familiar. The set climbs from level N to level P, and the later texts ask more: the four-question guide, the grandfather profile and the science passage on writing things down are all at P. These reading passages with questions keep the focus on fair, kind looking back, not on blame.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
Pairs well with
Pair the reading with Self-Reflection Task Cards, or keep looking back with Self-Reflection What Would You Do? Cards and other self-reflection activities.
Questions teachers ask
Is there an answer key?
Yes, for the multiple-choice questions, on the last page of the PDF.
Is Grandpa Ghazi in the profile passage a real person?
No. All people, places and events in these passages are fictional, including Grandpa Ghazi.
