About this resource

Kenji says he rode the giant coaster, everyone leans in, and “me too” is almost out of your mouth. These honesty what would you do scenarios put Grades 2–5 in that spot 40 times over, with fibs, promises, extra change and reading logs. Each Think, Choose, Act card offers three actions, and students explain theirs, practicing Responsible Decision-Making when a shortcut looks easier than the truth.

What students practice

  • Telling the truth instead of a fib
  • Keeping promises, or being honest when one can’t be kept
  • Doing the honest thing when no one is watching
  • Saying no to shortcuts and cheating
  • Saying no kindly when a friend asks them to lie

What’s inside

  • 40 scenario cards across Telling the Truth Instead of a Fib, Keeping Promises, Doing Right When No One Is Watching, Resisting Shortcuts and Cheating and Not Covering for Others
  • 120 action cards: the honest choice, a choice that dodges, and the fib or shortcut
  • 40 reflection sheets
  • A teacher guide with five ways to use the cards; 77 pages

A look inside

  • Too Much Change: the busy teen at the ice cream counter hands you an extra dollar. Action cards: Give It Back, Ask Your Dad, Pocket the Dollar.
  • The Twenty-Minute Box: you read for ten minutes, and the reading log asks for twenty.
  • Tell Talia I’m Out: your big sister mouths that you should say she’s not home. The best card is Say She Can’t Talk.

How to use these honesty what would you do cards

  • Think-Pair-Share on Three Pet Drawings: two promised drawings, not started, due Friday
  • Partners argue Ask for a Hint versus Close the Door in The Box in the Closet
  • Role play Who Made the Poster and freeze when Tariq whispers, so students stop and think
  • Honesty activities for any part of the day: reflection sheets in an SEL writing station, or one scenario card as a morning meeting starter

Grade fit

Home leads with 16 scenes, then 13 community and 11 school. The temptations are sized for elementary students, like a peek at a birthday present or a badminton shot just outside the line, so Grades 2–5 recognize every one of these honesty scenarios.

Digital version

The interactive digital version shares as one link: students answer the think questions (or just read them in the quick format), choose an action card and say why, on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

The focus is truth beyond your own mistakes: fibs, promises, cheating and covering for others. Owning up to something you did wrong isn’t the theme here.

Questions teachers ask

Does Not Covering for Others teach kids to tattle?

No. The best cards say no kindly and offer a way forward. In Who Made the Poster, Say It Kindly tells the teacher Tariq didn't help this time and offers him a job on the next poster.

Is there a card for keeping a promise you can't keep?

Yes. In Three Pet Drawings, Set a New Day has you tell your friends the drawings will be ready next week and then keep that date.
