About this resource

Two kids, one swing, and only one turn left. These conflict resolution reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten short texts at F&P levels K–M that include meerkats, a crayon clash and a block tower disaster. The set builds Relationship Skills, one of the five CASEL competencies, with problems second graders can solve out loud.

What students practice

  • Staying calm and listening when two wants collide
  • Using “I” statements in a conflict
  • Finding a win-win instead of grabbing or blaming
  • Seeing how asking beats grabbing
  • Rebuilding together after a problem

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels K–M, in a mix of how-to guides, science texts and real-world features
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Teacher’s Copy (11 pages) with each conflict resolution passage beside its questions and the correct answers marked
  • 33-page student file with an overview of all 10 passages, their levels and SEL focus

A look inside

  • The Last Swing: two students both want the last turn, and a teacher helps them talk it out.
  • The Crayon Clash: one child grabs and one asks, with very different outcomes.
  • Why Meerkats Work Together: teamwork through difficulty in the animal world.
  • Meet Aiden: The Peace Maker: a student steps in when classmates argue and helps them listen.
  • How to Solve a Problem with a Friend: calm, listen, use “I” statements, find the win-win.

How to use these conflict resolution reading passages

  • Small-group reading at levels K–M, then a talk about how the characters solved their problem
  • Partner reading with the open-ended questions as a talk about what each student would say or do
  • SEL reading comprehension: teach the four-step approach in How to Solve a Problem with a Friend
  • Morning work or homework, checked with the Teacher’s Copy
