About this resource

Knowing you should “talk it out” is different from knowing what to say when you are frustrated. These conflict resolution task cards close that gap for Grades 2–5 with real disagreements, including ones where the other person will not listen, and a decision point on every card. They build Relationship Skills.

What students practice

  • De-escalating a disagreement
  • Saying what they need calmly
  • Listening to another perspective
  • Working toward a solution that feels fair to both sides
  • Thinking about what each person might be feeling

What’s inside

  • 50 task cards for Grades 2–3 (Set A): everyday disagreements over sharing, hurt feelings and recess games
  • 50 task cards for Grades 4–5 (Set B): more complex conflicts involving trust, fairness, group work and online messages
  • Two print layouts: 2 cards per page for discussion, 4 cards per page to save paper
  • 100 reflection sheets, one per card, for written response and independent practice
  • 182 pages in all: 80 in the card file and 102 in the reflection sheet file

A look inside

  • Set A: “You and your friend both want to use the same marker during art time. What could you say or do to solve the problem in a fair way?”
  • Set B: “Your friend keeps interrupting you during group work, and it’s frustrating. How can you let them know how you feel and ask for a better way to work together?”
  • Set B: “You and a friend are giving each other the silent treatment after a disagreement. What could you do to start working things out, even if it feels awkward?”

How to use these conflict resolution task cards

  • SEL lessons on conflict resolution, communication and repair
  • Morning meetings and restorative circles
  • Partner or small group role-play of what to say
  • A class discussion after a real conflict in the room
  • Task cards for students to use in pairs or as interactive task cards on a device, with a reflection sheet for each

Grade fit

Set A fits Grades 2–3 with sharing and recess games; Set B is for Grades 4–5 and brings in trust, fairness and online messages like a group chat taken the wrong way.

Digital version

The interactive digital task cards share as one link: you choose Set A or Set B, and students type their answers on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
