About this resource

A joke that goes too far leaves something to repair. These conflict resolution reading comprehension passages give Grade 4 readers ten texts at F&P levels Q–S, with gorillas, a conflict coach and a cafeteria clean-up. The set builds Relationship Skills, one of the five CASEL competencies, for fourth graders working out when to ask an adult.

What students practice

  • Identifying common triggers for conflict
  • Reacting differently to the same problem
  • Finding win-win solutions where both sides feel heard
  • Clearing up a misunderstanding directly
  • Asking an adult for help while staying part of the solution

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels Q–S, in text types such as how-to guides, science pieces and student profiles
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Answer key covering all 50 conflict resolution multiple-choice questions
  • 38 pages, with an overview page of levels, text types and SEL focus

A look inside

  • The “Just Joking” Fight: a joke goes too far, and the hurt it caused has to be repaired.
  • Meet Talia: The Conflict Coach: three questions she always asks to help classmates reflect.
  • Why Gorillas Use Gestures, Not Growls: how animals resolve disputes without aggression.
  • The Art Show Argument: a credit dispute settled by pausing, talking honestly and compromising.
  • When Adults Help with Conflict: how to ask an adult for help and stay part of the solution.

How to use these conflict resolution reading passages

  • Literacy centers or small groups at levels Q–S, with groups comparing how two characters respond
  • Pair reading, then answer the open-ended questions in writing or aloud
  • SEL reading comprehension: teach the four steps in How to Find a Win-Win Solution
  • Homework with the 50-question answer key
