Talking to Different People in Different Ways
Students learn to choose words and tone that fit the audience and situation, fix communication mistakes respectfully using a repair script, sustain two-way conversations by asking follow-up questions, give specific useful feedback to peers, read changes in tone or body language mid-conversation and adjust, and listen actively throughout a full class discussion.
Lesson Overview
What students will be able to do by the end of this lesson: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to shift their vocabulary and tone to match their audience and situation, repair a miscommunication using a specific fix-it script, sustain a two-way conversation through connected follow-up questions, give feedback that names one strength and one improvement, notice when a conversation is going wrong and make a visible adjustment, and maintain active listening behaviors across a full group discussion.

Readiness check — do this before Day 1:
Before starting this lesson, check whether students can do the following. If they can’t yet do these things, run the Rescue plan below before beginning.
– Students can read a basic tone or body language cue (a frown, a quiet voice, crossed arms) and make a reasonable guess about what it might mean for a conversation.
– Students can say something specific — not just “I liked it” — when asked to respond to a classmate’s work or idea.
– Students can hear a correction or suggestion without shutting down, walking away, or pushing back at length.
