About this resource
Sapna stops in a busy hallway, kneels down and helps Pablo scoop up his spilled markers before the bell. These kindness reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten short texts at F&P levels K–M about noticing when someone could use a hand and choosing small kind words and actions. This SEL reading comprehension set builds Social Awareness through small, everyday kind acts.
What students practice
- Noticing when someone could use a hand
- Using kind words, like a real compliment

A look inside
- Rolo the Red Wagon Helps Out: Sahil and his grandpa pull Rolo around the block to collect outgrown picture books for the preschool down the street.
- Even Toddlers Like to Help: in experiments, toddlers helped a grown-up pick up a dropped object without being asked or rewarded.
- My Surprise Kindness Mission: Pearl sorts the messy shoe pile by the door and leaves a drawing on her dad’s pillow.
- The Kindness Chain Reaches the Door: a class adds a paper link for every kind act until the chain stretches all the way to the door.
How to use these kindness reading passages in Grade 2
- Small reading groups, from Sapna’s story at level K to the four level M passages
- Morning meetings: read “Three Ways to Use Kind Words” and pick one way to try that day
- Reading partners, with the two open-ended questions as something to talk about
- A kindness theme, with “The Kindness Chain Reaches the Door” as a class model
Grade fit
Levels climb from K to M, so readers start with a short story and a fable and finish at level M with a profile, a comparison, a problem-and-solution story and a news feature. The places are ones second graders know: a school hallway, the library, a heavy hall door held open for kindergartners. These reading passages with questions fit easily into a class kindness theme alongside other kindness activities.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
