About this resource

Anger tends to show up in the body before a student can put a name to it. These anger management conversation cards start right there, with 102 morning meeting questions such as “Where in your body do you feel anger first?”, then move on to triggers, angry thoughts and calm choices. Written for Grades 2–8, the set builds Self-Management by keeping the talk on each student’s own anger rather than on fights between people.

What students practice

  • Describing what anger feels like inside
  • Spotting the body’s early warning signs
  • Knowing what sets their anger off
  • Checking whether an angry thought is a fact or a guess
  • Pausing and choosing a calm response
  • Making things right after an angry moment

What’s inside

102discussion questions in six focus areas, 17 each: what anger is and how it feels, my body’s warning signs, what sets me off, the thoughts behind my anger, pausing and calm choices, and making things right and growing
102matching reflection sheets, two per page
75pages
  • Printable cards, six to a page on 17 full-color pages, numbered so you can track the ones you’ve used
  • A numbered question list that tags each prompt by type, led by Observation (22) and Analytical (20)

A look inside

“How is feeling angry different from acting angry?”
“How could you tell if an angry thought is a fact or a guess?”
“How is cooling down different from hiding your anger?”
“What could you do on the bus if someone keeps bugging you?”

How to use these anger management conversation cards in morning meeting

Morning meetingRead one card aloud, let partners turn and talk, then hear a few answers from the circle
Calm cornerKeep the pausing and calm-choices cards there so a student can pick one to think through quietly or talk over with a trusted adult
Counseling or small groups working through one area, such as the thoughts behind anger
Writing promptsPair a card with its reflection sheet for an SEL journal

Grade fit

Second graders can answer “What do your hands want to do when you feel angry?” from recess and sibling squabbles. Older students dig into the thinking cards, like why words such as “always” and “never” make anger feel bigger, which makes the set solid conversation starters for middle school.

Digital version

The digital version turns the questions into one link: students answer on any device with no student logins and download an answer sheet to hand in.

Pairs well with

Questions teachers ask

Can I use one part of the set at a time?

Yes. The questions are numbered in six runs of 17, so you can pull one focus area, such as Q69–85 on pausing and calm choices.

Do the questions ask about anger at home?

A few do, such as what a brother, sister or cousin does that makes a student mad. Read ahead and choose the cards that fit your group.
