Our Fair and Just Community

Students learn to distinguish between a right and a responsibility, explain how a rule makes things fairer for people who might be disadvantaged, take on a community role and note its impact when done well versus not done, contribute one fair proposal to a class discussion about a shared decision, and identify one action they took this week that helped the community.

Fairness & Community Responsibility One week 3 skill segments 45–75 min across the week 5 standards

Supporting standards reinforced:

CodeWhy it connects
SA-VAL-3-1Class rules in Segment 1 are shown to reflect shared values — fairness, safety, and belonging — making the rule-analysis skill feel purposeful, not arbitrary
RDM-ETH-3-3Noticing when something isn’t fair (a fairness issue) is the entry point for SoA-FAR-3-2 rule analysis and SoA-FAR-3-4 fair proposals
SoA-INC-3-1Segment 2’s discussion scenarios surface how different needs within the class are what make fair decisions harder — and more important

Key Vocabulary

  • Right — something you are entitled to, something that belongs to you just by being part of this community (e.g., a turn, a fair share, a safe space to learn)
  • Responsibility — something you owe to others or to the community; your part in keeping things working well for everyone
  • Fair — when everyone gets what they need, even if that looks a little different for each person
  • Community role — a job or task you take on that helps the whole class or school, not just yourself
  • Fair proposal — a suggestion that considers what works for everyone, not just what you want

Materials

  • Whiteboard or chart paper and markers (for displaying the core sentence frame and vocabulary during each segment)
  • Before the week begins: Post your unit anchor chart and I Can Statement where students can see them — you’ll reference both throughout the week.
  • No additional printed materials required for the lesson block; practice resources are separate

How this lesson is structured: Each skill segment below has an I Do (teacher models the skill with a realistic scenario) and a We Do (class practices together with your guidance). Independent practice — the You Do — lives in the practice resources that go alongside this lesson.
