About this resource
Noticing other people starts with looking up from your own moment. Free with a free account (no card needed), these social awareness scenario cards give Grades 2–6 sixty chances to do it. The set covers ten areas of Social Awareness, from empathy and point of view to fairness, cultures and community.
What students practice
- Noticing how someone else feels and why
- Imagining a moment from another person’s side
- Reading cues that someone wants space, a turn or a new topic
- Meeting different foods, languages and traditions with curiosity
- Thinking about fairness in shared spaces
What’s inside
- 60 scenario cards in ten subtopics of six, such as Reading Social Cues and Body Language and Appreciating Diverse Backgrounds and Cultures
- An open-ended card for each scene (“What do you notice about others here?”) plus a guided card with three questions
- 120 journal pages, one open-ended and one guided per scenario
- Every scenario title by subtopic, and a printing guide; 158 pages
A look inside
- The Hood-Up Step: you plop down next to your friend, and she scoots a few inches away and turns her face toward the fence.
- The Winner-Stays Table: two high schoolers have kept the ping-pong table for an hour while a fourth grader keeps asking, “Is it my turn yet?”
- The Haft-Sin Table: at your family’s Nowruz table, your friend points at the garlic and asks, “Wait, why is that there?”
How to use these social awareness scenario cards
- At morning meeting, read The Hood-Up Step and ask what the friend’s scoot might be saying
- Teach one subtopic per SEL lesson, such as the six culture cards
- In small groups, use the guided cards as social situation cards that move from what students see to what they could do
- Use The Winner-Stays Table and its journal page after a class disagreement about turns
Grade fit
These social awareness scenarios star people elementary students meet every week: cousins, coaches, neighbors. Grade 2 students can lean on the guided questions, while Grade 6 students dig into why people act as they do.
Digital version
The printable and digital scenario cards work together: share one link, pick the open-ended or guided format, and students respond on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
Good to know
The six culture cards name real traditions and languages, including Nowruz, Shabbat and Arabic writing. Read them ahead so students who share one can add to the talk if they choose.
