About this resource
Why does one small fib so often need another to hold it up? These honesty reading comprehension passages bring that question to Grade 3 readers in ten passages at F&P levels N–P, from a magic mirror that learns to be truthful and kind to a reading log with a tempting shortcut. Each one ties honesty to Responsible Decision-Making, with one written prompt about the text and one about the reader’s own life.
What students practice
- Telling a hard truth with simple, clear words
- Being honest and kind at the same time
- Keeping a promise when a better offer comes up
- Scoring fairly without a referee
- Telling what really happened and saying “I think” when unsure

A look inside
- The Reading Log Shortcut: Zofia writes her real minutes, and the honest number shows she needs a book she enjoys.
- Little Fibs, Big Tangles: Thaddeus keeps adding details to a made-up beach trip, while Tiwa admits she has never been and asks questions.
- Meet Mr. Trevelyan: The Honor Stand Grower: a roadside vegetable stand with a money box and no one watching.
- How Memory Can Stretch a Story: memory is not a video recording, and people sometimes add details without meaning to.
How to use these honesty reading passages in Grade 3
- Small groups at levels N–P, starting with Why Honesty Matters to Everyone
- SEL time with The Promise I Almost Broke, where Tomasz chooses planting tulip bulbs with his grandma over a board-game morning
- Reading partners, who can debate the recess scoring system in The Score Nobody Was Keeping
- One-on-one reading conferences, using the prompt that links each passage to the student’s own experience
Grade fit
Third graders start asking for reasons behind rules, and these passages give them: why honesty matters even if no one finds out, how a fib grows, why memory can slip. Levels climb from N to P, ending with a magician’s classroom visit and the memory science piece, so these reading passages with questions stretch confident readers by the end.

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
