About this resource

Motivation rises, dips and can be rebuilt. These motivation reading comprehension passages help Grade 5 students understand where their own drive comes from and what to do when it stalls, across ten readings at F&P levels S–V. Neha teaches herself bike repair from a library manual one summer, with no grades or assignments, and nine other passages each look at drive from another side. It’s SEL reading comprehension for Self-Management, pitched at older readers.

What students practice

  • Naming what blocks them from starting
  • Finding ownership of their own effort
  • Doing more than the minimum
  • Using small wins to get started
  • Building a strong personal “why”

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels S–V in ten different text types
  • A takeaway after each passage
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended prompts per passage
  • A multiple-choice answer key on the last page of the PDF
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • The Sled That Waited for a Steep Hill: an old sled learns that the girl’s push, its smooth runners and a gentle slope work together.
  • Whose Art Classes Are These?: Nkechi talks with her parents and teacher and negotiates choosing art projects she cares about.
  • Nasrin and the Four O’Clock Slump: Nasrin runs a fair test of different breaks and learns which one truly refuels her.
  • The Shadow-Theater Club Makes Its Own Shows: with no shows scheduled all winter, club members set their own monthly mini-shows for younger classes.

How to use these motivation reading passages in Grade 5

  • Reading groups moving through the set from level S to level V
  • Literacy centers, checked with the answer key
  • Class conversations about effort and choice, starting from Doing Enough vs. Doing My Best
  • A springboard talk after What Makes a “Why” Strong? about how a weak reason can be made stronger

Grade fit

At levels S to V, the readings suit fifth graders ready for longer, more abstract nonfiction, such as an explanation of how the brain finds small wins rewarding. The stories respect that older students can examine their own drive: a high schooler starts a free tutoring circle at the library, and a student compares a project done to the minimum with one she cared about. These reading passages with questions leave room for honest reflection.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
