About this resource
At Gloria’s dinner table, everyone shares a rose and a thorn from the day. These self-reflection reading comprehension passages bring that habit of looking back to Grade 2 readers in ten short texts at F&P levels K–M. Students think about what happened, what went well, what was hard and what to try next time, a Self-Awareness skill they can use the same afternoon.
What students practice
- Naming a good part and a hard part of the day
- Asking what went well and what they would do differently
- Looking back to figure out why something went wrong
- Noticing how their actions affect someone else
- Counting the fun parts, not just what went wrong
What’s inside
- 10 passages at F&P levels K–M, in ten text types including a fable, a science passage and a class news article
- 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
- 2 open-ended questions per passage
- A brief lesson summary after each passage
- Answer key for the multiple-choice questions on the last page
- 34 pages
A look inside
- The Sandcastle That Crumbled: Greer thinks back on how she built her castle and notices the sand was too dry.
- Dusty the Badger Looks Back: a badger who dropped berries by rushing plans to carry fewer and make two trips.
- Why My Sister Cried at Bath Time: Dulce realizes her big, happy splashes kept getting water in her sister’s eyes.
- Second Graders Look Back on Library Day: a class talks over its first public library visit, noisy line and all.
How to use these self-reflection reading passages
- A morning meeting read-aloud of Gloria’s Rose and Thorn at Dinner to start a circle chat about the day
- Small groups, from the level K passages up to the four at level M
- Partner reading of Meet Enzo, the After-Game Thinker, with the open-ended questions as talk prompts
- Homework or seatwork, checked with the answer key
Grade fit
The look-backs come from places second graders know: dinner, T-ball, a sandcastle, bath time, recess. Levels rise from K to M, and the ideas stay concrete, like a rose and a thorn, or the three parts of looking back shown through a rainy indoor recess. They work as SEL reading comprehension: short reading passages with questions that young readers can connect to their own day.
Digital version
With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
