About this resource

Stories let young children watch someone else make a choice and see what happens next. This right and wrong storytime kit pairs a read-aloud with puppets and decision cards, so kindergarten and first-grade students (Grades K–1) can practice spotting kind, honest choices. It is a Responsible Decision-Making lesson, and one of the SEL activities that work well as a read-aloud extension.

What students practice

  • Explaining why a choice is right or wrong
  • Noticing how a choice affects others
  • Connecting a story lesson to their own day
  • Suggesting what a character should say or do

What’s inside

  • A teacher script with timed steps, about 30 minutes, and a flexible outline
  • Story Summary Sheet: title, characters, key choice, consequence and moral
  • Right and Wrong Decision Cards: 40 short actions to mark right or wrong, in two card sizes
  • Story Reflection Worksheet with four draw-or-write prompts, in two versions
  • Puppet Show Script Template and a Certificate of Completion; 30 pages

A look inside

  • Teacher script: “When someone finds something that doesn’t belong to them, what should they do?”
  • Story Reflection prompt: “What lesson did you learn from the story?”
  • Puppet Show Script Template: title, characters, two scenes of dialogue and a narrator’s moral

How to use this right and wrong storytime kit

  • Read a storybook with clear good and not-so-good choices, pausing at decision points to ask what the character should do
  • Bring in a puppet that needs help with two scenes: a friend asks to play with its toy, and it finds something that isn’t its own
  • Let children suggest what the puppet should say or do
  • Close with a discussion that connects the story to real life and asks why the right choice is sometimes hard

Grade fit

The puppet scenes, the 40 short decision cards and the draw-or-write prompts are pitched at Grades K–1. For first graders, the puppet show template is a good extension.
