About this resource

Some children arrive at school already telling themselves what they can’t do. This positive self-talk mirror kit for kindergarten and first grade (Grades K–1) gives them kinder words to try, a hand mirror to say them into and sticky notes to keep those words in sight. It grows confidence as part of Self-Awareness, in SEL activities young children can repeat at home.

What students practice

  • Learning what self-talk is
  • Practicing encouraging phrases like “I am kind”
  • Saying a kind sentence to their own reflection
  • Starting a small daily habit

What’s inside

  • A teacher script with timed steps, about 20 minutes, and a flexible outline
  • Positive Affirmation Sticky Notes templates with sentence starters
  • Affirmation Mirror Instructions Card with six steps
  • Positive Self-Talk Coloring Pages: a mirror design with space to write affirmations around it
  • 20 Positive Affirmation Cards and a Reflection Questions Sheet with a five-point scale; 34 pages

A look inside

  • Affirmation Mirror Instructions: “Look into the mirror and smile at yourself.”
  • Teacher script: “Look into your mirror and say your positive affirmation out loud.”
  • Reflection Questions Sheet: “How did it feel to say positive things to yourself?”

How to use this positive self-talk mirror kit for kindergarten

  • Explain that self-talk is how we talk to ourselves in our minds, and that today the goal is kind words
  • Give each child a hand mirror and sticky notes to write or draw affirmations around its edge
  • Model one affirmation with a big smile, then have each child say one to their reflection
  • Use the sticky-note starters for children who need a nudge, and close with the reflection sheet’s Terrible-to-Awesome rating
