About this resource

Three dollars, an ice cream truck, and a jar at home labeled “SKATEBOARD.” These personal values scenario cards hold 60 small choices like that one, and each open-ended card asks “What matters most to you here?” They’re designed for Grades 2–6 and build Self-Awareness, one everyday choice at a time.

What students practice

  • Putting words to what matters to you
  • Saving, spending and giving with a goal in mind
  • Choosing what matters over what is easy
  • Noticing when a choice drifted from your values
  • Weighing two values that pull in different directions

What’s inside

  • Five themes of 12 scenarios each: What Matters to Me, Saving and Spending, Values in Everyday Choices, When My Choices Don’t Match, and When Values Pull Two Ways
  • 60 open-ended cards and 60 guided cards, three questions on each guided card
  • Two journal pages per scenario
  • 158 pages

A look inside

  • The Three-Jar Shelf: you’ve just earned three dollars washing the car, and your jars say SAVE, SPEND and GIVE.
  • The Brownie Half: you hold the knife over the last brownie, already sure one side will come out bigger, while your sister watches.
  • The Unread Space Books: five library books about planets have sat under your bed for three weeks, and they’re due back Friday.
  • The Birthday Dinner Pick: your family folds dumplings together every birthday, but your best friend shares your birthday and wants you at her dinner.

How to use these personal values scenario cards

  • Use the Saving and Spending cards in an SEL lesson about money choices
  • Bring a When Values Pull Two Ways card to morning meeting or circle time and hear both sides
  • Use the guided cards in small groups, where the three questions help students name the value behind a choice
  • Add a journal page after a card from When My Choices Don’t Match

Grade fit

Second graders can talk about cutting a brownie fairly, while fifth and sixth graders can dig into competing loyalties like the birthday dinner. The everyday settings (garage sales, lemonade stands, a little free library) keep the personal values scenarios grounded across Grades 2–6.

Digital version

The printable and digital scenario cards work together: share one link, pick the open-ended or guided format, and students respond on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Pairs well with

Pair these with Personal Values Task Cards or Personal Values Worksheets for more personal values activities.

Questions teachers ask

Is there a right answer to each card?

No. The cards ask what matters most to the student, and the When Values Pull Two Ways cards in particular have more than one reasonable choice.

Do students need accounts for the digital version?

No. Share one link, and students answer on any device without logging in.
