About this resource

Saying “stop” clearly, and meaning it, is a skill students can practice. These boundaries and personal safety conversation cards give 102 morning meeting questions about personal space, saying “no” and “stop,” safe and unsafe feelings, everyday safety rules and the trusted adults students can turn to. They suit Grades 2–8 and build Relationship Skills.

What students practice

  • Noticing their personal space and which touches feel okay
  • Saying “no” and “stop” in a clear, strong voice
  • Telling safe feelings from “uh-oh” feelings
  • Following safety rules for roads, water and getting lost
  • Knowing their trusted adults and how to tell them

What’s inside

  • 102 discussion questions in six focus areas: My body and my personal space; Saying “no” and “stop”; Safe and unsafe feelings; Safety rules I know (roads, water, getting lost); Safe people and telling a trusted adult; Helping myself and others stay safe
  • Reflection questions lead (19), with 16 strategy questions on what a student could say or do
  • Printable cards, six to a page, with a matching reflection sheet for each question
  • 75 pages

A look inside

  • “How big is your personal space bubble when you stand in line?”
  • “What could you say if a relative wants a hug and you’d rather wave?”
  • “How is a fun surprise different from a secret that feels worrying?”
  • “How could you list five trusted adults by tracing your hand?”

How to use these boundaries and personal safety conversation cards in morning meeting

  • Morning meeting: a lighter card such as “If your space bubble had a color, what would it be?” with a turn-and-talk
  • SEL lessons on one focus area, such as Safety rules I know (roads, water, getting lost)
  • Small groups or counseling sessions with the Safe people and telling a trusted adult cards
  • Reflection sheets as a written way to answer instead of sharing aloud

Grade fit

The questions use everyday situations, like tickling, wrestling with a cousin, a pool gate left open or getting lost in a store, so they work from Grade 2. Questions about trust, privacy and a firm “no” without a reason give older students plenty to discuss, so the cards also work as conversation starters for middle school.

Digital version

The digital version turns the questions into one link: students answer on any device with no student logins and download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

The cards stay with everyday personal safety. Online safety, peer pressure and bullying are not part of this set. Several cards, such as “Which grown-up would you tell if a secret felt worrying?”, point students toward a trusted adult.
