About this resource
Building something together sounds simple until the tower wobbles. This teamwork tower challenge packs real relationship skill into one stacking activity for Grades 1–4: students share an idea, listen to a different plan, adjust when the two don’t match and decide together what to do when it falls. It builds cooperation and turn-taking within Relationship Skills, in classroom SEL activities that need only blocks or cups.
What students practice
- Sharing ideas and listening to others
- Taking turns
- Compromising and encouraging teammates
- Solving problems together when something falls
What’s inside
- A teacher guide with a detailed script and a flexible outline: three steps, about 25 minutes
- Teamwork Strategy Planning Sheet: five planning questions, starting with tallest or strongest
- Turn-Taking Reminder Cards: 24 short reminders, in color and black-and-white
- Reflection Questions for Teamwork Tower (four team questions) and a Tower-Building Tracker (five questions)
- Teamwork Achievement Certificate; 19 pages
A look inside
- From the teacher script: “Here’s the rule: Take turns. One person places a block at a time. Everyone gets a chance.”
- Turn-Taking Reminder Card: “Focus on working together, not just winning.”
- Reflection Questions: “What was hard about taking turns? How did you solve that?”
How to use this teamwork tower kit
- Talk about teamwork as sharing ideas, taking turns and helping each other, and set the twist that it is about how well the team works, not just height
- Give pairs or small groups blocks or cups and a few minutes on the planning sheet
- Build one piece per person per turn with the reminder cards in view, and watch what the group does when a tower topples
- Fill in the tracker and reflection questions, talk through what worked and what was hard, and finish with the certificate
Grade fit
The stacking task is simple enough for Grades 1–4, and the planning and reflection questions let older students dig deeper into how the team worked.
