About this resource
Belonging doesn’t happen by itself; it gets built, and it helps when the building is visible. The Friend Circle is an inclusion activity kit for Grades 2–4 that asks each student to show how they help others feel welcome, then joins every contribution into one shared circle for the classroom wall. It draws on Social Awareness and Relationship Skills.
What students practice
- Including someone in a group, game or activity
- Seeing classmates as individuals
- Choosing the qualities they value in a friend
- Turning kindness into specific actions
What’s inside
- A teacher guide with a detailed script and a flexible outline: three steps, about 25 minutes
- A Friend Circle Template for writing one friend’s name in each section and one thing that makes a good friend
- A Friendship Qualities Worksheet with 16 example qualities and space for a top six
- 16 Friendship Scenario Cards with two questions each, in color and black-and-white
- A How to Be a Good Friend Checklist of eight actions and a four-question Reflection on Friendship Worksheet; 21 pages in all
A look inside
- From the teacher script: “Let’s imagine you’re on the playground and see someone standing by themselves. What could you do to help them feel included?”
- Scenario Card: “Your friend doesn’t understand the homework and looks frustrated.”
- How to Be a Good Friend checklist: “I respect my friends’ ideas, even if they are different.”
How to use this friend circle inclusion kit
- Ask what it means to include someone, then picture the playground
- Each student decorates a paper circle showing how they include others; join them into one connected circle for the wall
- Talk through the scenario cards, then have students choose their top qualities in a friend
- Use it as a back-to-school community builder or a reset after a stretch of conflict
Grade fit
The playground pictures, scenario cards and checklist actions suit Grades 2–4 in elementary school. As SEL activities go, it doubles as diversity and inclusion activities, because every student adds a circle to the display.
