About this resource

One eleven-year-old keeps a whole street fair on track. These teamwork reading comprehension passages show Grade 5 readers how cooperation works in the wider world, in clubs, crews and whole communities, across ten texts at F&P levels S–V. The set builds Relationship Skills through SEL reading comprehension rooted in real group work.

What students practice

  • Coordinating a team toward a goal
  • Using every member’s strengths
  • Tracking shared work as a team
  • Telling collaboration, cooperation and compromise apart
  • Reflecting on how a team has grown

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels S–V: stories, informational articles, a how-to guide and a perspective story
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended prompts per passage that draw on students’ own group experiences
  • A short lesson summary closing each reading
  • Answer key for the multiple-choice questions on the last page
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • The Bridge-Load Challenge: after early trial loads collapse their paper bridge, Wesley’s group tries the design of its quietest member.
  • When the Two Halves Didn’t Fit: two subgroups build roads and buildings for a model town that don’t line up.
  • How Naked Mole-Rats Run Their Colony: diggers, gatherers, guards and caregivers keep an underground colony going.
  • The Relay Baton’s Story: a baton remembers a spring of dropped hand-offs and a team learning to trust each other.

How to use these teamwork reading passages in Grade 5

  • Small-group instruction with “Competing or Cooperating?” at level T
  • Literacy centers, using “How to Build a Shared Task Board” and the answer key
  • To kick off a cooperative unit in science or art, for example with “Three Schools Co-Host a Music Festival”
  • Independent practice on the word-history piece “Collaboration, Cooperation and Compromise”

Grade fit

Fifth graders are ready to see teamwork beyond the classroom. These reading passages with questions reach level V and move into community settings, from a youth rowing team to three schools sharing one stage, while the problems stay ones a ten- or eleven-year-old will recognize.
