About this resource

Fourth graders notice who is hovering at the edge of a game and which player skips the handshake after a loss. These social skills reading comprehension passages build on that noticing with ten Grade 4 texts at F&P levels Q–S on reading group signals, adjusting to a place, hosting a guest and handling a win or a loss when others are watching. It’s a Relationship Skills set that adds SEL reading comprehension to upper elementary classrooms.

What students practice

  • Reading group cues before joining in
  • Being a thoughtful host to a guest
  • Modeling good sportsmanship after wins and losses
  • Offering fair trades and accepting a polite no
  • Adjusting behavior to the unwritten rules of a place

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels Q–S, including a strategy guide, a recess problem, a class news feature, a student profile and a concept explainer
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended prompts per passage; the second asks students to try the skill in their own day
  • Multiple-choice answer key on the last page
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • Why Wolf Pups Play Fair: wolf and dog pups bow before they wrestle and sometimes let smaller pups win.
  • Two Captains, One Season: two basketball captains act very differently after wins and losses, and their teams copy them.
  • The Day I Missed Every Clue: Xinyi keeps talking about her game while her friend yawns and checks the clock.
  • The Girl Who Invented the Join-In Flag: Tala clips a flag to the recess game cones that means come play.

How to use these social skills reading passages in Grade 4

  • Reading groups, moving from the two level Q passages to the three at level S
  • Literacy centers, with the five multiple-choice questions and the answer key for checking
  • Reading partners, who talk through the open-ended prompts after “The Card Swap Problem at Recess”
  • Just before recess, with “Reading the Signals Before You Jump In”, or before a field trip, with “The Unwritten Rules of Different Places”

Grade fit

At nine and ten, students are reading social signals all day, and these Q–S reading passages with questions give them words for what they see: open and closed circles, faces and posture, the mood a greeting sets. In “Fourth Graders Become Cue Detectives”, a class works out feelings from muted video clips.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
