About this resource
“I can’t do this” closes a door. “I can’t do this yet” opens it again. The Power of Yet is a growth mindset activity kit for Grades 1–3 that helps students hear the difference between those two sentences. It builds Self-Awareness of their own thinking, and the SEL block gets a practical tool for learning.
What students practice
- Adding “yet” to “I can’t”
- Naming one step toward a challenge
- Describing how a hard challenge feels
- Breaking a challenge into five steps
- Noticing progress over time
What’s inside
- A teacher guide with a detailed script and a flexible outline: three steps, about 25 minutes
- 30 “I can’t… yet” Challenge Cards with a guiding question on each, 6 shown with sample answers, plus 6 blank cards
- A fill-in The Power of Yet Poster
- A Growth Mindset Worksheet with five reflection questions around one personal challenge

A look inside
- From the teacher script: “Have you ever said, ‘I can’t do this,’ or ‘I’m not good at that’? Well, what if we added the word ‘yet’ to the end of those sentences?”
- Challenge Card: “I can’t spell hard words” with the follow-up “What tools can help you practice spelling?”
- Growth Mindset Worksheet: “How does it feel when you can’t do it right away?”
How to use this power of yet growth mindset kit
- Talk about how “yet” turns “I’m not good at math” into “I’m not good at math yet”
- Students draw a Challenge Card, add “yet” out loud and name one step
- On the worksheet, they move to a real personal challenge
- Track it on the Yet Ladder, then use the certificate for the choice to keep trying
Grade fit
Everyday struggles such as riding a bike or spelling hard words suit Grades 1–3 in early elementary. Among SEL activities, it is a quick way to start a growth mindset unit.
Pairs well with
Pair it with My Goal Ladder or Bouncing Back.
Questions teachers ask
