About this resource
Children are often their own harshest critics, and this positive self-talk mirror kit gives students in Grades 1–3 a kinder script to practice. The voice in a student’s head during a hard moment can be more discouraging than anything said out loud, and most of the time no one has asked them to notice it. It builds Self-Awareness through SEL activities that end in a daily habit.
What students practice
- Noticing how the words they say to themselves shape how they feel
- Swapping a discouraging thought for a kinder one
- Choosing a phrase that feels true
- Saying it aloud while looking in a mirror
What’s inside
- A teacher guide with a detailed script and a flexible outline: three steps, about 25 minutes
- Positive Talk Cards: 40 affirmation cards, 8 per page, in color and black-and-white
- My Positive Self-Talk List, with space for five favorite phrases
- Positive Talk Mirror Reflection Sheet: four questions on how students felt before and after mirror practice
- Mirror Decoration Kit of cut-out stars, hearts and messages, and a Monday-to-Sunday Daily Positive Talk Tracker; 29 pages
A look inside
- Positive Talk Cards: “I can handle any challenge.” and “I am important, and my voice matters.”
- From the teacher script: “Imagine you’re giving a friend encouragement—but this time, it’s all about encouraging yourself.”
- Reflection Sheet: “How did you feel after saying positive things to yourself?”
How to use this positive self-talk mirror kit
- Start with a short talk on self-talk, using thoughts like “I’m not good at this” and kinder swaps like “I can do this”
- Have students pick a phrase from the cards, or write their own
- Each student looks into a mirror, meets their own eyes and says the phrase aloud
- Share which phrase they chose and when they might need it, then fill in the list and use the tracker through the week
Grade fit
The phrase cards, mirror step and short written reflections suit Grades 1–3, and the cards double as positive affirmations for students to reuse. A mirror station works if you don’t have one for each child.
Good to know
Students need a mirror, or a mirror station you set up. The decoration pages work best printed on sticker paper.
Pairs well with
For younger students, the Positive Self-Talk Mirror Activity Kit (K–1) offers a simpler version, and Positive Self-Talk Bookmarks to Color keep the phrases in sight at reading time, more positive self-talk activities.
Questions teachers ask
How long does the lesson take?
The script is built around three steps and about 25 minutes.
Do students need a mirror?
Yes. Each student looks into a mirror and says their phrase aloud, and a mirror station can work.
