About this resource
Fireworks watched through a phone screen. A sandwich gone in four bites. These mindfulness what would you do scenarios catch Grades 2–5 in the middle of rushing, then ask them to stop and think: what would you notice if you slowed down right now? Each of the 40 scenes comes with three action cards to compare, and together they build the Self-Management habit of paying attention on purpose.
What students practice
- Slowing down to notice the world around them
- Using their five senses to take in where they are
- Checking in with each part of the body
- Noticing thoughts as they come and go
- Enjoying the moment they are in
What’s inside
- 40 scenario cards: eight each for Slowing Down to Notice, Using My Five Senses, Body Scan Awareness, Noticing Thoughts Come and Go and Enjoying the Moment Right Now
- 120 action cards: a mindful choice, a halfway one and a hurried one
- 40 reflection sheets
- Teacher notes with a five-station layout; 77 pages
A look inside
- The Fizzy Foot: partway through a long assembly, your foot feels “fizzy and prickly, like soda bubbles.” Follow the Fizz, Stretch It Out or Stomp It Awake?
- The Cereal Song Loop: an ad jingle loops in your head as green hills slide past the train window. The best card is Let It Fade.
- The First Strawberry: you’re racing your brother Mateo down the rows, and each picker can eat one berry.
How to use these mindfulness what would you do cards
- Turn & Talk on Rain on the Big Window: what could you hear, see and feel?
- Act out Toes to Head from Wiggly Under the Covers
- Write It Out station with the Noticing Thoughts Come and Go sheets
- One reflection sheet as a bell-ringer
Grade fit
The scenes sit where elementary students hurry: the bus line, PE, a car ride to the cousins’ farm, a ferry. Fifteen are in the community, 13 at school and 12 at home, and the language stays concrete (crunching leaves, warm cocoa), so Grades 2–5 can picture each sense. They fit a quiet SEL slot as mindfulness activities.
Digital version
The interactive digital version shares as one link: students answer the think questions (or just read them in the quick format), choose an action card and say why, on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
Pairs well with
After these mindfulness scenarios, add Mindfulness Task Cards for written practice, or start the morning with Mindfulness Conversation Cards.
Questions teachers ask
Is this a breathing or calm-down set?
No. The scenarios are about noticing the present moment with the senses, the body and passing thoughts. Students in them are mostly hurrying, waiting or distracted rather than upset.
Do I need audio or a script to run it?
No. Each card is a short scene with three think questions, so you can read one aloud, discuss it and show the three action cards.
