About this resource

Fifth graders often know what they should have done a moment after they did it. These impulse control reading comprehension passages give Grade 5 readers ten texts at F&P levels S–V that build what closes that gap: practiced awareness and a personal pause plan. The set supports Self-Management, a CASEL competency, and moves past “calm down” toward strategies students build for themselves.

What students practice

  • Building a personal pause plan
  • Weighing what to send or say before acting in digital spaces
  • Seeing self-control as a leadership strength
  • Timing an apology so it works as real repair
  • Tracing how one impulse sets off a chain reaction

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels S–V, from a problem-solution passage to a cause-and-effect reflection and a second brain-science text
  • 5 multiple-choice questions per passage
  • 2 open-ended questions per passage for written answers or discussion
  • Answer key for all 50 multiple-choice questions
  • 36 pages, including an overview of the passages with F&P level, text type and SEL focus

  • Independent practice or homework, checked with the answer key

Grade fit

These reading passages with questions are written for Grade 5, with levels climbing from S to V. The topics reach into group chats, class participation and the brain science behind an urge, which suits the top of elementary, and the V-level texts give strong readers real work.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
