About this resource

Every teacher has watched a student make a choice they knew was not quite right, even as they made it. These making good choices task cards give Grades 2–5 practice at slowing down, weighing options and choosing what fits their values, even when the easy choice points the other way. The practice sits in Responsible Decision-Making, one of the five CASEL competencies.

What students practice

  • Slowing down before choosing
  • Weighing options and consequences
  • Being honest when it costs something
  • Choosing fairness when the easy choice is unfair
  • Acting on their values when a group is doing otherwise

What’s inside

  • 100 task cards in two sets: Set A (50 cards, Grades 2–3) with everyday classroom and social situations and clear decision points, and Set B (50 cards, Grades 4–5) with more nuanced cases of honesty, fairness, peer pressure and competing interests
  • Two print layouts, 2 cards or 4 cards per page
  • 100 reflection sheets, one for each card
  • 182 pages: 80 in the card file and 102 in the reflection sheet file

A look inside

  • Set A: “You want to win a game so badly, you think about bending the rules. What helps you make a fair and honest choice?”
  • Set B: “Your teacher steps out of the room, and your classmates start talking loudly. What choice can you make that shows leadership and maturity?”
  • Set B: “You accidentally hear someone’s secret. No one else knows. What’s a respectful and responsible way to handle this situation?”

How to use these making good choices task cards

  • SEL lessons on responsible decision-making, starting with a Set A card about a game
  • Morning meetings and class community discussions
  • Counseling sessions that focus on behavior and choices
  • Reflection journaling and written response using the matching sheet for each card

Grade fit

These task cards for students come in two levels. Set A is labelled for Grades 2–3 and Set B for Grades 4–5. Choose by how much nuance your class can hold: Set B starts to ask what leadership looks like when the teacher is out of the room.

Digital version

The interactive digital task cards share as one link: you choose Set A or Set B, and students type their answers on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
