About this resource

After a big snowfall, Svetlana and her dad shovel grumpy Mr. Quist’s path too. These kindness reading comprehension passages give Grade 5 readers ten passages at F&P levels S–V that treat kindness and compassion as things people actually do, week after week. This SEL reading comprehension set builds Social Awareness by looking closely at steady, lasting help.

What students practice

  • Being kind to someone difficult
  • Turning caring feelings into action
  • Seeing compassion as steady, ongoing action
  • Keeping kindness going over time
  • Giving with healthy limits
  • Organizing kindness in a community

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels S–V in ten different text types
  • 5 questions with lettered answer choices per passage
  • 2 open-ended prompts per passage that ask students to cite evidence and link ideas to their own experiences
  • Answer key for the multiple-choice questions on the last page
  • 44 pages

A look inside

  • What Grandma Paz Taught Me About Compassion: Sumaya watches Grandma Paz drive an elderly neighbor to the store every week for months, then joins in.
  • Keeping the Letters Going: a class’s letters to care-home residents fade after two weeks until shared pen pals and question slips keep them going all term.
  • Meet Saanvi: Welcome Kits for New Families: maps, local tips and handmade notes for families moving to town, with classmates recruited to help.
  • The River That Gave Too Much: the mountains teach a river that steady giving lasts longer than giving everything at once.

How to use these kindness reading passages in Grade 5

  • Close reading of “Can Kindness Be Contagious?” and what some studies suggest about kindness spreading
  • Small-group discussion of “One-Time Gift or Lasting Help?”
  • A kindness unit in advisory, using the four steps in “How to Turn Compassion Into Action”
  • Checking the multiple-choice answers with the key

Grade fit

Levels run from S to V. Fifth graders already know kindness matters, so the passages ask harder questions: whether a one-time donation does as much as a weekly reading partnership, and how to give without running dry. A seed-and-cutting swap shelf and a day traced through small acts of compassion round out these reading passages with questions.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
