About this resource

How might the playground look to a kindergartner? What does a lunch worker notice that students never see? These social awareness conversation cards ask 102 morning meeting questions that turn your students outward, toward other people’s feelings, points of view, cultures and communities. Free with a free account (no card needed), for Grades 2–8.

What students practice

  • Understanding how others feel
  • Seeing a situation from another point of view
  • Showing kindness, compassion and gratitude
  • Reading body language and social cues
  • Including others and appreciating different cultures
  • Caring for their community

What’s inside

  • 102 discussion questions in ten areas of Social Awareness, from Understanding How Others Feel to Being a Caring Member of Your Community
  • Areas in between include Practicing Gratitude and Appreciation, Understanding Communities and Fairness, Reading Social Cues and Body Language, and Appreciating Diverse Backgrounds and Cultures
  • Eleven “Tell about a time” prompts mixed in with imaginative, analytical and reflection questions
  • Full-color cards (six per page) and 102 matching reflection sheets (two per page)
  • 75 pages

A look inside

  • “Why might a rainy day be great news to a farmer but not to you?”
  • “How many people might have helped bring your lunch to your table?”
  • “How can an inside joke make someone feel left out?”
  • “Which neighbors might go days without a visitor, and how could you tell?”

How to use these social awareness conversation cards in morning meeting

  • Morning meeting: one card, a turn-and-talk, then a few voices
  • Conversation circles: pull a handful of cards from Celebrating Differences and Belonging and let students draw one at random
  • Partner or team-building time, with the body language cards (“What could a big sigh from a friend mean?”) as icebreakers
  • SEL lessons or journals, pairing a gratitude card with its reflection sheet

Grade fit

Younger students answer from home and the playground: a little sibling watching you leave for school, a ball that keeps landing in the neighbor’s yard. Older students can dig into the fairness questions, like why being lucky and being treated fairly might be different things. That range makes the set work as conversation starters for middle school as well as in elementary classrooms.

Digital version

The digital version turns the questions into one link: students answer on any device with no student logins and download an answer sheet to hand in.
