About this resource

Gratitude comes easily at a thankful-tree craft and less easily when the field trip gets canceled. These gratitude task cards cover both: 100 prompts that ask students to notice the good people, things and effort around them and decide how to say thanks. They’re written for Grades 2–5 and build Social Awareness, the CASEL competency of seeing and valuing the people around you.

What students practice

  • Naming what they’re thankful for, big and small
  • Saying thank you so people know they mean it
  • Noticing helpers, from crossing guards to custodians
  • Finding something good on a hard day
  • Appreciating the effort behind a gift or a meal
  • Telling gratitude apart from wanting more

What’s inside

  • Set A themes, Grades 2–3: Things I’m thankful for; Saying thank you; People who help me; Little good things; Thankful for nature and my community
  • Set B themes, Grades 4–5: Noticing the good on hard days; Appreciating effort, not just things; Gratitude vs. wanting more; Expressing thanks meaningfully; Gratitude habits
  • 50 cards in each set, 10 per theme (A1–A50 and B1–B50), in 2-per-page and 4-per-page versions
  • One reflection page per card in the companion journal: 103 journal pages next to 81 pages of cards

A look inside

Set A: “At your birthday party, you open a toy you already have. What could you say to your friend when you open it? Why might thanks still matter?”
Set B: “Your aunt knits you a scarf in a color you don’t really like. What could you honestly appreciate? How could you thank her without pretending?”
Set B: “The crew who painted the sets for the school play never gets a bow. Whose behind-the-scenes work might people miss? How could you show appreciation?”

How to use these gratitude task cards

Morning meetingRead one Little good things card (A31–A40) and let a few students answer
An SEL lesson or small group on Gratitude vs. wanting more (B21–B30): ads, comparing gifts and hand-me-downs
Writing prompts on the reflection sheets, such as B31, where a plain “thanks” feels too small
Counseling sessions during a hard stretch, with Noticing the good on hard days (B1–B10)

Grade fit

In Set A (Grades 2–3), thanks stay close to home and school: a warm dinner, the crossing guard, star-shaped pancakes. Set B, for Grades 4–5, asks for gratitude that is specific and honest, like seeing the week of work in a little brother’s lopsided clay mug.

Digital version

The interactive digital task cards share as one link: you choose Set A or Set B, and students type their answers on any device with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.

Good to know

A few Set B cards sit on hard moments, such as a grandparent in the hospital (B8) or a hectic moving day (B9). Read them first if a student is going through something similar.

Pairs well with

Questions teachers ask

Is this mostly about manners?

Partly. Set A practices saying thank you, but many cards ask students to notice the people, effort and little good things behind what they have.

Can students answer on a device?

Yes. You share one link and choose Set A or Set B; students type their answers without logging in and download an answer sheet at the end.
