About this resource
“Everyone else was doing it.” This ethical decision-making role play kit works on the reasoning behind a line like that, before the moment of choice arrives. Pairs and small groups in Grades 2–5 act out real-life dilemmas that ask them to weigh fairness, honesty and how their choices affect others. It is a Responsible Decision-Making lesson in a set of SEL activities where students commit to a choice and play it through.
What students practice
- Thinking a choice through before acting
- Weighing fairness, honesty and kindness
- Using empathy as a guide in a dilemma
- Reflecting on how different decisions lead to different outcomes
What’s inside
- A teacher guide with a detailed script and a flexible outline: three steps, about 25 minutes
- Ethical Dilemma Scenario Cards: 20 dilemmas, each with three reflection questions
- Role-Playing Character Cards: 12 roles, each with a situation and three “Think About” questions
- Reflection Worksheet (six prompts) and a Fairness and Empathy Checklist (five yes/no questions with space to explain)
- Feedback Cards for noting what went well and one suggestion for growth; 21 pages
A look inside
- Scenario 5: “You accidentally break something in the classroom, but no one saw you.”
- Role-Playing Character Card: “Your group can’t agree on how to finish the project. Some want to rush, while others want to take their time.”
- Fairness and Empathy Checklist: “Could I have made a different choice that was more fair or kind?”
How to use this ethical decision-making role play kit
- Open by asking about a time they had to choose between something easy and something right
- Give pairs or groups a dilemma card and a character card, and have them act out what they would do
- After each scene, ask whether the choice was fair for everyone, how the other person might feel and what else could be tried
- Finish with the reflection worksheet and checklist, and let peers or teachers use the feedback cards
Grade fit
The dilemmas, from a rumor about a classmate to a friend who wants to copy your homework, are written for Grades 2–5. Younger groups can do the role-play aloud, while older ones can write their reflections.
