About this resource

A flashing button pops up in the middle of a learning game, and Ted stops to ask his mom. These digital citizenship reading comprehension passages give Grade 2 readers ten brief texts at F&P levels K–M about pausing before they click, keeping names and passwords private and choosing kind words online. Written for children just starting to use games, learning apps and class computers, it’s a Responsible Decision-Making set for young readers.

What students practice

  • Asking a grown-up before clicking or downloading
  • Keeping their full name, address and passwords private
  • Choosing kind words in messages
  • Checking whether something they read is true
  • Taking screen breaks and stopping on time

What’s inside

  • 10 passages at F&P levels K–M in ten text types, from a warthog fable to a profile of the school librarian
  • A takeaway at the end of each reading
  • 5 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-ended questions per passage
  • MCQ answer key on the last page
  • 34 pages

A look inside

  • The Warthog Who Checked Twice: Wendell checks with an older warthog before spreading a note that the watering hole has turned bright pink.
  • Why Your Eyes Need Screen Breaks: people blink less at screens, so eyes can feel tired and dry.
  • The Video That Kept Playing: Uche’s family turns off autoplay and uses a timer so he knows when to stop.
  • My Name Stays Private: when a game asks for his full name and school, Tobin asks his dad, and they choose a nickname together.

How to use these digital citizenship reading passages in Grade 2

  • Pair How to Keep a Password Safe or What Is Private Information? with a technology lesson
  • Partner reading or SEL reading comprehension, with Kind Words and Unkind Words Online as a starting point
  • Send The Video That Kept Playing home beside a note to families about screen habits

Grade fit

Levels start at K with Wendell the Warthog and reach M for the last four passages, including the class poster of screen rules and the visit with Ms. Tembo in the computer lab. The settings stay close to a second grader’s screen time: a learning game, a class app, a learning video that keeps playing. Short sentences make these reading passages with questions a good first step into online safety.

Digital version

With the interactive digital version, you share one link and students read each passage and answer the questions on any device, with no student logins. At the end they download an answer sheet to hand in.
